ETD Interest Groups

Discussion and Planning Facilities

These facilities are provided by European Telework Online with additional support from the European Telework Development Initiative.

Purpose:

The purpose of this resource is to facilitate discussion and planning among groups of individuals who are working on various aspects of European Telework Development.

The Facilities:

  1. The facilities comprise:

  2. A set of email discussion lists reflecting the main topics identified by the ETD planning group; by having a separate list per topic, individuals can decide which topics they want to actively participate in and join only those lists. Individuals don't need to keep personal track of who is to receive which messages. New participants can be introduced to all or only some of the discussion.
  3. Associated with each list, a www discussion archive page, where all the messages posted to the list will be stored; this means that any member of the planning group can easily review the discussion in lists that he or she is not subscribed to. It also means that group members don't need to keep a personal archive of all discussions and new participants can readily see what has gone before.
  4. Linked to the same pages, the facility to post and maintain working papers for consideration by the group, so that its easy for all concerned to find and read any working paper, and be confident the one we are reading is the current version. As we evolve aims and objects etc these can be posted and maintained online.

By using this approach we hope to minimise the effort to participate and make it easy to bring in new participants to particular topics, and for participants to select the parts of the discussion where they can make the best contribution without having to receive all messages on all topics, maintain local archives etc.

Structure

The topics are as shown below.

The email addresses for the lists are set up as etd-xxx@eto.org.uk, where xxx is the topic concerned. The email address for each list is shown after the topic name below, for example etd-tw@eto.org.uk is the Telework list.

The related www page showing the discussion archive is similarly named, with the main url being http://www.eto.org.uk/igs - for example: http://www.eto.org.uk/igs/etdtw is the archive for the Telework discussion.

Each email list is associated with a list server address, to which commands can be sent (eg join or leave the list), but this facility is also provided via a simple www interface. The server address for all lists is etd-igs-request@eto.org.uk.

The Interest Group on Telework and Disability has developed into the Information Society disAbilities Challenge (ISdAC) - please visit their web pages and send a message of support.

and the same mechanisms can be used to rejoin a list or to enroll a new participant. Please note that these facilities are moderated and that you have to fill in a "registration of interest form" before you can join.

Another way to join the lists is to send mail to

saying

join <list-name> [your.email@your.domain]

as the first line of your message (the subject is ignored) where <list-name>is replaced by any of the list names refered to above, and [your.email@your.domain] is optional but should be used if the address you will be posting from is different to the one currently in use.
